I have to admit I was surprised by so many negative thoughts from several members here. I can't help but wonder if a lot of the negative reaction isn't due to the JG/TS stories instead BINGO!! LOL well at least for me, I can't say that isn't entirely untrue. But I did enjoy it significantly more the second time I saw it than the first time. And it will definitely be added to my movie library when it comes out. Again, I LOVED Jake in that character. IMHO I'm just irritated at Anne that she stole the show away from my man!! So there you have it, a little honesty at Christmas

I'm sorry that my review might sound that way, V. It wasn't meant to sound accusative in any way. I usually agree with you most of the time, but this is one point of view where our opinions must diverge then. I wasn't influenced by other reviews. More so, I just simply agree with them. Yes, this movie has everything...and that may not have been a good thing. My main point in my review was that the movie stretched itself too thin. It tried to be the perfect romantic comedy - unique setting, romance, comedy, raunchiness, nudity, drama, and sentimentality - and its desire to please every audience is what makes it so superficial. I felt like the romance was almost half-assed in a way. And like sweetpea said, why DIDN'T Jamie have to struggle more with Maggie's Parkinson? After all, it is a very serious, life time sickness. I felt that he accepted it far too easily. It made his whole declaration of love rather pointless. I would have probably liked LaOD if it focused on either romance or the drug sales world. I'm sure a combination of the two CAN be done, but it wasn't done very well imo in LaOD. While there are a few notable exceptions to this rule, as a general rule of thumb, these types of movies either have to be a full on romantic comedy or full on romantic drama to be really enjoyable to me. Take, for example, The Ugly Truth. While that movie is just Apatow styled raunchy humor and sexuality, I enjoyed it much more because it focused on the comedic aspect of the romance and didn't take itself too seriously. I felt like LaOD was trying to be too many things at one. Quality, not quantity. All those montages too where counter-productive. Instead of making the romance better, it was also a cheap-shot, trying to induce the audience to fall for the couple without actually putting the effort it. Seeing those scenes in the montages ACTUALLY play out would have been much better. BUT, nonetheless, as you said, to each their own. LaOD is the new Bubble Boy in many ways, some JG fans ADORED IT, while others DESPISED it. It's all a matter of opinion. I really did try to like the film upon entering the theater and even after, but I had to be honest. JG and Anne's acting really is superb in LaOD, but it just wasn't enough to save it.

I hope my opinion of the film doesn't ruin our excellent friendship, V.
I would hate for this to color it.

To be honest (and this may sound harsh) I dont really care for the JG/TS relationship... infact i dont even really beleive in it... so that didnt affect my opinion of the film at all, to be honest i havnt even thought about those two being together since before i even saw the movie!!! Im a bit of a movie buff and i would NEVER let outside influences affect my thoughts of a movie. Its just not in my DNA I just have strong opinions.. if i dont like something i dont and if i do youll know about it too! (I just saw Inception. OMG LOVED IT!) But i will say, normally im a typical Jake fan...in that i love Jake movies even if they are rubbish, but this one not so much... so thats saying something to me!! I still say tho, best Jake movie ever for Jake hotness!!! So for that reason i will watch again...

I just got caught up on everything over here...whew! The controversy continues! My parents saw it a couple of nights ago and they both said it was "alright." Neither of them had any expectations whatsoever going into it (I don't even think they really knew what it was about), and they enjoyed it while watching it but had similar problems as many of the rest of us, most notably, as sweetpea brought up, the lack of development in Jake's character to make it believable that he would commit to Maggie the way that he did. And the first thing my mom said to me was, "Anne stole the show!" On that, at least, we can all agree. I openly admit that I have problems distancing myself when I watch Jake movies. I have since probably Zodiac, and TS, to me, is naught but a footnote. But I definitely understand why she would have the influence she did on Katie and anyone else who had a similar reaction, and in a world where increasingly a celebrity's public life is a more important commodity than his actual art, I think it's very legitimate to consider the influence such things have on the movie-going experience... I thought BBM was the greatest movie ever and I spent 18 months writing a blog with a girl who thought it was boring as hell. So I know that it is possible for Jake fans to disagree and still love each other, and I really hope this discussion doesn't ruin any of the camaraderie we've built up here!! As for what Jake's going to do next, I'm with Sam in thinking he'll probably take a small break. But we still have Source Code in the near future, and the great thing about Jake's career right now is that he is ALL OVER THE PLACE. So regardless of what we thought this time around, we know the next movie will be *completely* different...

I thought Bubble Boy was such a waste of his talent. I kept shaking my head while watching it. It wasn't funny to me I thought it was dumb. I loved Oct Sky and TDAT and BBM stands above everything. the best Jake has done. LAOD was good, but it didn't blow me away. I thought there was something lacking in the script. Jake did a good job acting and the chemistry between him and Anne, well it went far beyond just the movie. I am going to say they belong together in RL (for the record. I feel VERY strongly about this and I've never felt this strongly about two actors before ever) Jake usually does take breaks, but it's been over 6 months, I would think he would be getting ready to do something soon. I know he has Source Code coming out but usually he has something he is filming. I think we can all agree to respect each other's opinions even if they differ from our own.

I hope my opinion of the film doesn't ruin our excellent friendship, V. I would hate for this to color it. OMG, KD, that would never happen. I am not that shallow at all, even if I am extremely opinionated. I am totally open minded & respect others' differences completely. Your review just sounded very familiar, that's all. I do not have a problem with anyone not agreeing with me, sorry if it sounded that way. Not my intention, seriously. BTW, I had a horrible last 2 days at work & couldn't get over here to reply a little quicker.
I gotta say though that I really agreed with Sam's sister myself. Unfortunately for me, the movie is being taken down from my theaters here to make room for True Grit, & several others coming out. It has at least made it's budget here in the US, & it may have a pretty good box office overseas from what it looks like so far. I am very excited about Source Code & can't wait for that movie more than ever now. I will always love LAOD though, I think it's one of Jake's best after BBM & JH. & gotta throw in my 2 cents about BB. I totally ADORED that movie, Jake's character made me laugh my ass off throughout the whole movie. He was so young when he made it & it was just a funny & fun movie. I am personally glad he made that movie, along with Highway & several others that are not favorites among a lot of Gyllenhaalics. I am an oddball, I admit it. I just enjoy each movie for what it is, & lose myself in each one. I also like all movie genres, so that could be part of why I like so many when others don't.

LOL GURL, I loved BB as well. It's so much second hand embarrassment, I love it. Plus Jake's hair makes the whole movie worth it. I gotta watch it again some time.
It's okay, at least we agree that BBM and JH are one of Jake's best films. LaOD just wasn't my cup of tea, but I do think I'll like Source Code much more. SciFi is more my tastes. Romantic Comedies that I genuinely enjoy are far and few between. When Harry Met Sally will be one of my favorites of all time though...(or Sleepless in Seattle..or You Got Mail...I think I have a Meg Ryan fascination...)
I sincerely hope LaOD does well though, so maybe at least Jake will continue to do more similar roles in the future. OMG, if he did more roles like BBM or PoP, I would be overjoyed. PoP is still one of my fav. action adventure-fantasy films.

Well, KD, we DEFINITELY agree on PoP, which makes me happier than anything since I felt like I was a major loner in my PoP love among the ISJers.
I love MR myself, & loved all of those movies you named too. I love all movie genres, so there aren't any movies I don't like due to a certain genre.
& regarding BB, hah, I know what you mean, THAT HAIR. That alone was enough to crack me up for most of the damn movie.

Finally I saw Love & Other Drugs!
I went to see the film without high expectations and I think it helped, because it was fun. Seriously. I enjoyed watching this movie. And people who were in the cinema too. Everyone laughed in almost every scene.
Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway are great in every scene they appear and show a chemical much stronger than I expected. And it helps in the dialogues (which are not always good) and the love scenes, because they are so comfortable in their characters.
The great performances from both offset the weak moments of the script, as a Zwick's film, it is always clear. As the orgy scene, for example. That did not seem to be part of the movie. Or was placed at the wrong time. We were in a romantic and dramatic moment, and the director puts a scene totally misplaced.
The character of Josh Gad is totally unnecessary. And I could not believe for a moment that he was the younger brother Jamie.
I think they should have invested a little more in the character of Oliver Platt, Bruce. He's great in every scene that appears.
It is much better than a lot of romantic comedy I've seen in recent years. Made me laugh and I think romantic comedies rarely funny.
I'll see again. And buy the DVD or BR.
