Just got back from seeing it again. I liked it much better this time, things flowed better and such. I tried to set aside my Jake bias and see him as an asshole drug rep and it helped me appreciate the character more. Though, I have to say, Jake is Jake to me and he'll always be adorable no matter how big of a dick he plays in movies OR the girls he dates. (Hee Hee) One thing that is still bothering me is right before Jake tells Anne he loves her and she goes "Honey? Honey! Your heart's beating really fast" I REALLY wish she wouldn't have said "honey" IDK I just thought it was kind of out-of-character.

I still haven't seen it a second time, though I think I've resigned myself to waiting until it hits the $2.50 theater. Movies are too damned expensive! NSA, I didn't remember Anne saying that until just now, but you're so right! It was out of character...it seemed like that was a big leap for her to call him that. Actually, that whole scene seemed a little off to me, but I'll wait until I see it again to give my final opinion. And when I do see it, I'm going to try to follow your lead and try really hard to see past Jake! That was a big hangup for me the first time around...

Positives. -Jake looked so god damn hot in this movie it wasnt fucking funny. -Anne Hathaway did an AMAZING job and honestly, i think she stole the show (she did have the better role tho!) -Jake got a good amount of screen time. Perfect amount! Negatives. -Bit overboard on the nudity, i dont think it was necessary! -They needed to either make a movie about a drug rep, or make a movie about a love story. Both coulda been brilliant. Trying to smash the two together just didnt work. Not enough time to build story lines or really get the characters. It seems the movie lacked essense, but really, i think it had too much for the viewer to really grasp properly. -Take out the drug rep part, the brother, and probably alot of the comedy i think this movie could have been bloody genius - Movie was a little slow... alot of useless stuff. See point below. - Brother and bum scene = not good. Ruined every single naked scene ever in history.
Im really really sad to say that this Jake movie would rate in the lower half of my favourite Jake movies. I think i may have had high expectations. Plus, i dont like romcoms and the ending was a bit sickly.
Throw stones, im prepared. I bought my shield!

Totally spamming this thread, but it is on topic and my last comment was nearly 4 hours ago..
My sister just text me saying
"Love and other drugs= best movie ever" i asked her why she liked it and she said "It was everything, funny, sad, serious, romantic and random"
She had no expectations and she loved it. I guess being a Jake fan isnt always a good thing when viewing Jake movies...

Sam don't feel bad, a lot of us were underwhelmed!! And I totally agree with you that they shouldn't have tried to tell both stories. Anne totally stole the show. Her character required so much development for us to get on board with her that Jakes character kind of got left for dead. I think it either should've been a movie just about Jake or just about Anne. They really didn't develop Jamies relationship phobia adequately so the scene PG and I are talking about (though I think Jakes adorable in it) is kind of confusing. I've said this before but this movie should have been like 4 hrs long...at least then maybe the stories could've been properly told TOGETHER. And I know it's kind of against Jakes rules but I liked him in comedy, he's really good at it so I hope he does more.

There are scenes in it that made no sense. I could have done without the scene where his brother is masturbating to the video of Jamie and Maggie ew! the brother was annoying. He could have been left out. I would like to have seen more of the conflict in Jamie about loving Maggie but having to accept that she is ill. It is a LOT to ask of a partner, especially when the relationship is new. It is a different situation if you are already in a committed relationship or a marriage and one partner gets ill, but for Jamie and Maggie either could have walked away at any time. Just wasn't enough of the emotional scenes for me. hopefully source code will be over the top.

has anyone heard what Jake has up next? He hasn't worked since April (when Source Code wrapped) I would think he would be getting ready to work again.

But not its kinda been half done and its too late. has anyone heard what Jake has up next? He hasn't worked since April (when Source Code wrapped) I would think he would be getting ready to work again. On IMDB he is "rumoured" to be in a movie called New Years Eve www.imdb.com/title/tt1598822/ Other than that i havnt heard a thing. Not sure if we will ever see nailed. Personally -and unfortunately- i think Jake might take a break, i wouldnt be surprised if he is working on his own movie, one that he is behind the camera for!

Not being pushy or anything but did we ever get KD's review?? I AM SUCH A BAD MEMBER/FAN. No, I haven't given my review yet, but tbh, there are a couple of reasons why: 1. Most everything I could have possibly applauded and critiqued about LaOD has already been said by other members most eloquently. (Yourself included) 2. LaOD did not leave much of an impression on me at all. I had such overwhelming hopes for this movie, given the early ecstatic reviews, and when I actually saw the film, I left feeling it was a decent film, but not worth buying on DVD or even worth contemplating over. All in all, LaOD, while enjoyable while it lasted, was wholly forgettable and unremarkable to me. The most positive thing I took away with me from LaOD was Jake and Anne's splendid chemistry and the beauty of Jake's Adonis body... So I guess I did just give a partial, half-witted review. But I will get to a full length one eventually, as soon as my life calms down a bit (hopefully after Christmas! ) I feel terrible for kind of disappearing from this forum the last couple of weeks. (I didn't think anyone would notice/think of me though! SO it warms my heart that you did remember (that I lied through my teeth about writing a review promptly, lol)!)

VANESSA, SAM, THIS IS FOR YOU~ <3
Love and Other Drugs, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, and directed by Ed Zwick, is a romantic dramatic-comedy set in the 1990s during the Viagra boom. The plot centers around Jamie (Gyllenhaal), a smooth-talking, womanizing sales representative, and Maggie (Hathaway), a free-spirited artist with early-onset Parkinson. When Jamie and Maggie meet, neither are expecting much out of their casual sexual relationship, but as the romance progresses, both begin to experience emotions which neither are much inclined to recognize.
Sounds like your standard, run-of-the-mill, Hollywood romance film, right? Well, your assumption is correct then. The film had outstanding potential given the fascinating setting and dynamic depth of its two lead actors. Love and Other Drugs, however, squanders both, becoming too entangled in its own montages and cliche story lines. What went wrong? Zwick tries to force the romance to the forefront, but the cut-throat world of pharmaceuticals is obviously the more interesting and provocative aspect of the plot. Had the setting, which played such a vital role in the beginning of the film, been allowed to expand and grown instead of being squished out of the picture by the bromidic love story, I'd be hailing this film as a success. Even though Love and Other Drugs was an enjoyable two hours while in the theaters, I was none impacted upon leaving the theaters. The film, like most other romantic comedies, is wholly unremarkable and unmemorable. The humor, while raunchy and at times slapstick funny, was overshadowed by the excessive nudity and uncomfortable sexuality.
On a positive note, the chemistry between Jamie and Maggie places Love and Other Drugs far above its peers. Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway give excellent performances, creating and capitalizing on a very convincing chemistry which gives real credit to the eventual romance between their two characters. Jake and Anne's chemistry alone makes this film worth viewing at least once.[/color]
There, I finally got my review out...two weeks after I saw it. I know, I'm such an ass. LOL

Thanks for your review, KD. I am a little surprised by it though. The 1st 2 paragraphs sound amazingly similar to several crappy reviews I read about it. I would hope that you were not influenced by some of them & that this truly reflects your real opinion. But to each his own, please don't misunderstand, I am not criticizing you for your opinion at all.
I am though very much in agreement with Sam's sister. She said exactly what I thought about it: "It was everything, funny, sad, serious, romantic and random". I have to admit I was surprised by so many negative thoughts from several members here. I didn't love the movie just because I am a Jake fan either. I really would have loved it for the same reasons if another great actor that had great chemistry with Anne had Jamie's role instead of JG. I can't help but wonder if a lot of the negative reaction isn't due to the JG/TS stories instead, but I know that wouldn't be the reason for KD not being thrilled with it, since I know she isn't bothered by their relationship at all. Sorry, I don't mean to offend anyone here, everyone is different & we all take away something different from everything. I will say this, that the ONLY scene I didn't care for that left a really gross image in my head, is the scene where Jamie opens the bedroom door at the pajama party to tell Josh they need to leave & we have to see his ugly naked butt while he is putting it to that girl. They could have totally done that scene differently & not shown it that way & it would have still gotten the message across that Ed was trying to show. Double Eeeewwww from me.

OK, on another note, since I am trying to make up for being MIA for a few days here, I feel the need to post a good review of the movie that I got yesterday written by a guy, Hal Goodtree, from "CaryCitizen", an online news site from Cary, NC. I really like the way he reviewed it. I have read a lot of other good reviews, but this one is a little different the way he categorizes the different aspects of it:Movies: Love and Other Drugs Director: Ed Zwick Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway Synopsis: Viagra salesman falls for girl with Parkinson’s Rating: R The Bottom Line: Adult drama ponders our views about sex, love and health care
If you’re tired of things exploding on screen, trips to parallel universes or anything in 3D, consider going to see Love and Other Drugs.
The Quintessential Date Flick – Something for Everyone
Love and Other Drugs seems like a movie that has been designed to please both men and women.
There’s a sensitive love story about a beautiful, tragic girl afflicted with a terrible disease. We experience her complicated journey from fear to trust.
If all that mushy love stuff doesn’t float your boat, how about seeing a lot of Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway naked? Ms. Hathaway has her blouse off in her introductory scene. It’s almost as if she’s trying to shake the Princess image.
Gyllenhaal’s character, the shallow and appealing Jamie Randall, doesn’t spend quite as much time in the buff. But he has definitely been spending a lot of time at the gym.
Something for everyone.
The Interesting Mr. Zwick
I wanted to see this film because I’ve always been interested in director Ed Zwick.
Some of you may remember the name for the 80's TV drama thirtysomething. Zwick co-created the series with partner Marshall Herskovitz.
Herskovitz and Zwick then moved on to epic historical dramas. For a while, they were the American version of Merchant Ivory, with movies including Glory, Legends of the Fall and The Last Samurai.
Love and Other Drugs marks a return to smaller, personal stories dealing with adult life.
Cast Highlights
This is really Jake Gyllenhaal’s movie. We meet him in scene one. Gyllenhaal manages to pull off the likable cad, halfway between Adam Sandler and George Clooney.
Almost overshadowed by the amount of screen time she spends naked, Ms. Hathaway does a fine job portraying Maggie Murdock, a free-spirited and rebellious Phase 1 Parkinson’s sufferer.
Oliver Platt, best known for his work in The West Wing, gives a fine supporting performance as Gyllenhaal’s boss.
The Big Picture
Love and Other Drugs touches on some big themes – love, disease and pharmaceutical drug abuse. While the main plot line is the love story, it may be the prescription subplot that is more interesting.
Gyllenhaal’s character is a drug pusher – the legit kind. He pushes Zithromax and Zoloft to doctors. Fully half the plot follows his career in pharmaceutical sales. When Pfizer, his employer, introduces Viagra, a complete frenzy ensues with his clients.
We watch this unholy mix of greed and medicine with a chuckle and shrug. The chuckle is because Mr. Zwick plays Jamie Randall’s character mostly for laughs. The shrug is because we accept the deeply flawed and disturbing nature of our health care system.
Throw in some winning performances and lots of fine cinematography devoted to Ms. Hathaway grown-up body, and you have a very appealing date movie. Entertaining, with something to think about if you are in the mood.
